Box springs, mattresses, toppers & featherbeds
Both box springs have 130 Bonell innersprings per m² for optimal support of any type of mattress. The difference lies in the height and the upholstery. The 20 cm high hotel box spring is upholstered in fabric from the Scott Collection. The 25 cm hotel box spring Premium is upholstered in fabric from the Sahara Collection. If you would like to receive colour samples, we will be happy to send them to you. Of course, we are also always happy to advise you by phone. Click here for more information.
The spring unit of a pocket sprung mattress consists of individually wrapped springs, which can all compress independently of one another and respond to body pressure, giving the body optimal support in every position. The number of springs is usually stated per m2. A pocket sprung mattress can also be used on an adjustable bed base.
The open coil mattress, also known as Bonell springs, consists of larger and therefore fewer springs per m2. The springs are linked together, which can create a slightly wavy feeling. The mattress is somewhat lighter and offers slightly less comfort.
A high-quality firm mattress is essential for a good night's sleep. On a firmer mattress, the Featherbed is ideal as a soft top layer. It is guaranteed to make the bed more comfortable and pleasant. Click here for more info.
The firmness of a mattress can vary, depending on which mattress you choose. The right firmness depends on your body weight and, of course, your personal preference, because sleep is very personal. With a new mattress, the springs first need to be broken in until they have reached the right suppleness; this can take 1–2 months.
There are many types of mattress toppers on the market with different fillings, such as cold foam, wool, comfort foam, latex, memory foam and horsehair. These fillings are generally experienced as stiff and add hardly anything in terms of extra comfort. By contrast, the Featherbed, with its resilient filling of down and feathers, moulds perfectly to the body and provides a soft, noticeable top layer. As people say: “the Featherbed feels like lying on a cloud”.
Both the Comfort Featherbed and the Original Featherbed add a delightful feeling of softness to the existing mattress(es). The difference between the models lies mainly in the composition and the filling weight:
- The Comfort Featherbed is filled with 95% feathers and 5% down;
- and the Original Featherbed is filled with 70% feathers and 30% down.
Alongside the difference in filling weight, the higher percentage of down in the Original Featherbed provides more resilience and softer support for the body. It supports even the lightest parts of our body.
The Featherbed offers a solution for both cold and warm sleepers. The filling of feathers and down adapts well to the temperature of the bed. The Featherbed provides cosy warmth on cold nights and very good ventilation on warm nights.
The Comfort Featherbed is similar to hotel Featherbeds and offers the familiar comfort of a night in a hotel. The Original Featherbed is a more luxurious version. Due to its unique composition, this model gives an exceptionally rich and soft feel.
The Featherbed and the mattress can be made up as one with a fitted mattress protector and a fitted sheet. It is also possible to make up the Featherbed separately with a topper mattress protector and a topper fitted sheet.
Fold back your duvet every morning so that the Featherbed can air properly. It is also important to shake up the Featherbed regularly to maintain its volume and resilience.
A Comfort Featherbed is best shaken up three times a week. For the Original Featherbed and Prestige Featherbed, once a week is enough. Finally, we advise you to rotate and turn over the Featherbed every week, for example when you change the bed linen.
With daily use, we recommend having the Featherbed professionally cleaned once every four years.
DOUXE Featherbeds are NOMITE certified. The NOMITE mark indicates that the product is suitable for people with a house dust mite allergy. Products filled with feathers and down offer climatic properties that are favourable for people. For the mite, which depends on humidity, this environment is in fact very unfavourable.
The soft, resilient composition of the DOUXE Featherbed provides very good support for the body. Although DOUXE has never had the Featherbed medically tested, the reactions are positive. Users say that the Featherbed brings relief for a sensitive back.
A mattress topper, or topper, is a padded layer that lies on top of a mattress. A topper such as the Featherbed moulds perfectly to the body and enhances the comfort of the mattress underneath.
In addition, a topper protects the mattress against dust, dirt and perspiration, thereby extending the life of the bed. Other names for toppers include: mattress toppers, top mattresses, overlay mattresses, mattress overlays, mattress pads and topper mattresses.
A (mattress) topper protects the mattress against dust, dirt and perspiration, thereby extending the life of the bed. A topper of down and feathers, such as the Original Featherbed, is the finishing touch to your bed and offers just that extra layer of experience you also enjoy in luxury hotels. A cloud you sink into, as it were. It also provides extra softness and comfort for the lighter parts of the body and enhances the properties of your mattress. The annoying gap (pont d’amour) between two single mattresses also becomes less noticeable.
In this combination, you only make up the topper, with a plateau mattress protector or a fitted mattress protector, and over it our fitted sheet with a 45 cm corner height.
Bed linen, fitted sheets & mattress protectors
Together with Supima cotton, Egyptian cotton has the longest fibre and is therefore the most durable type of cotton in the world. The finest types of cotton (such as Egyptian cotton) have a longer fibre, from which finer threads can be spun. These finer threads can be woven more closely together, resulting in a higher thread count. The longer the cotton fibre, the softer, more supple and higher in quality the cotton. That is why it is a favourite choice for bed linen in five-star hotels. The quality of bed linen made from Egyptian cotton can be felt immediately and is unmistakable. DOUXE duvet cover sets are produced in Portugal with a certificate of authenticity. All DOUXE Egyptian cotton products carry the quality mark of the Egyptian Cotton Association. This mark guarantees cotton of superior quality grown in Egypt.
Thread Count is literally the thread density of a fabric and indicates how densely the cotton is woven. A thread count of 300 TC means a density of 300 threads per square inch. The higher the TC, the finer and higher in quality the bed linen. Our bed linen ranges from 200 TC to 800 TC.
The difference between percale and sateen lies in the way they are woven. Sateen is a 1-over-4 weave and percale a 1-over-1 or plain weave. Because of these different weaving techniques, the fabric feels different. Sateen is soft, feels slightly warmer and is easier to care for, while percale feels crisp and slightly cooling. Hotels generally use this percale-woven cotton. Read more about percale and sateen here.
It is true that percale creases more at first. With use and washing, the fibres become increasingly supple, so it creases less and less. It also helps to pull the bed linen tight and let it air dry. Percale dries quickly, so it does not necessarily need to go in the tumble dryer. Also follow the washing instructions.
The size of the duvet cover depends on the size of the duvet. The most common size for a single duvet is 140 cm wide and 220 cm long. For a double duvet, this is 240 cm wide x 220 cm long. If you need a new duvet with a cover and are not sure which size to choose, the size of the mattress is a good starting point. With mattresses 160 cm or 180 cm wide, a duvet 240 cm wide looks best. With a mattress 200 cm wide, a 260 cm wide duvet with cover fits best. The length depends on the length of the mattress. A length of 220 suits mattresses from 200 cm to 220 cm long.
DOUXE has developed a high-quality collection of luxury hotel-quality duvet covers, produced in Portugal. Our bed linen is made of 100% certified Egyptian cotton, woven in sateen or percale, and is of luxurious quality with a high Thread Count (thread density). So you too can experience the five-star feeling of a hotel at home!
The most memorable overnight stays are generally those in a luxury hotel. That has to do with relaxation, a feeling of being ‘away’, and the many new impressions you process at night that make you fall into a deep sleep. But of course also with the quality of the bedding. Five-star hotels spend a lot of time selecting the finest bedding. Think of thickly filled yet lightweight down duvets, down mattress toppers (Featherbeds) and bed linen made of 100% Egyptian percale cotton. And not without reason: the main reason guests prefer one hotel over another is the bed. So the bed had better be fantastic. Every layer of these beds is thicker, softer and more unforgettable. We develop the finest bed products for hotels of this class, and for us hotel quality means the right combination of sleeping comfort, durability and choice of materials. A five-star feeling in your own bedroom, guaranteed.
Hotels often opt for a flat sheet when making up the mattress. A flat sheet is easier to clean and press professionally. For use at home, we recommend a fitted sheet. A fitted sheet has elastic, which makes it easy to fit neatly and tightly. It is very important to choose the right size fitted sheet to prevent it from shifting.
You can use the flat sheet as an extra layer under the duvet you sleep under, or simply instead of a fitted sheet with an elastic edge. If you use it as a fitted sheet, tuck it in tightly at the corners, just like an envelope.
How do you know which size flat sheet you need? If you use it to sleep under, you can go by the following when choosing the size:
- 240x270 – for beds 80 to 140 cm wide
- 270x300 – for beds 160 to 210 cm wide
If you want to bring the true hotel feeling into your home, go for a percale weave. The best choice if you love crisp cotton and tend to get warm at night. A percale weave provides good ventilation and a cooling effect. Perfect all year round, but a perfect delight in spring and summer.
If, on the other hand, you tend to get cold at night, go for the sateen weave. This weave creates a silky-soft fabric that feels softer and smoother. The fabric is slightly heavier and more finely woven, which makes it feel comfortably warm.
For a perfectly made bed, it is important to know the dimensions of your mattress. Your mattress has a width and a length. The height also needs to be measured. You can choose a fitted sheet with different corner heights. The standard corner height is 30 cm. Take into account any Featherbed and/or topper you place on the mattress, as these also determine the corner height your fitted sheet needs. For the Featherbed or a standard topper, choose a corner height of 40 cm.
These days, your bed linen gets properly clean at 30 degrees, but it can also be washed at 60 degrees. Before first use, we recommend washing the fitted sheet once. Only the first time does the fitted sheet shrink a little, so that it fits exactly around the mattress. For white fitted sheets, use a mild detergent for whites and wash with similar colours; for coloured fitted sheets, use a mild detergent for colours and wash with similar colours. After washing, it is important to dry the sheets properly. For percale-woven sheets, we advise against the tumble dryer: hang them up and let them air dry instead. Percale has the lovely quality of feeling cool and crisp. As a result, it does crease a little more quickly. Once it has dried on the line, you can make it up tightly around the mattress again. A great advantage of percale is that it dries very quickly, often within an hour.
A little housekeeping tip from the hotel world: use a plant mister to spray a fine mist over the fitted sheet once it is on the bed, and smooth it a few times with your hands. It will look beautifully smooth again, and you can jump back into a blissfully fresh, clean and neatly made bed! With a sateen weave, you can in principle put the sheets in the tumble dryer, as sateen creases less easily. Even so, we prefer hanging them up to air dry. That way they look neat and smooth again and there is no need to iron. The same housekeeping trick with the plant mister also works for sateen.
Because cotton still shrinks slightly during the first few washes, the bed linen is always a little larger than the stated size. We recommend washing it before first use. You will find that it fits afterwards.
Duvets & Pillows
You are a side sleeper
As a side sleeper, you are best off choosing a medium to firm pillow. You can then choose between a synthetic version or a natural filling of down and feathers. The synthetic version generally feels firmer and is slightly more resilient. A filling of feathers and down ventilates better and offers softer support.
You are a back sleeper
Sleeping on your back is by far the best position for your back and neck. To keep your spine and neck in a nice straight line, we recommend choosing a medium to firm pillow. This properly fills and correctly supports the hollow of your neck. Our hotel size 50x90 is ideally suited to this, because the pillow is narrower and therefore ensures a better distribution of the filling. The synthetic version generally feels firmer and is slightly more resilient. A filling of feathers and down ventilates better and offers softer support.
You are a stomach sleeper
If you sleep on your stomach, your neck is always twisted. This is not good for your body, and for stomach sleepers we even recommend sleeping without a pillow, or with as soft a pillow as possible. We have various soft versions for you to choose from. A filling of feathers and down offers the softest support.
Take the quiz here and discover which pillow suits you best.
If you wake up with pain in your neck, back or shoulders, it is likely that the support for your neck and head during the night has been insufficient. It is important to ensure that your muscles are relaxed during your sleep, and remain so. Keep this goal in mind when you choose your pillow. It is good to know that a pillow is best replaced every two years. This is because the filling gradually wears out through frequent use.
Are you looking for a pillow with a distinctive, luxurious hotel feel? At DOUXE, we offer you two excellent types of pillow filling, both with superior properties that contribute to a comfortable night's sleep and a luxurious sleeping experience.
First-class down and feather pillows
Our beautiful DOUXE pillows are filled with a combination of 30% down and 70% feathers, and our body pillows with a combination of 90% feathers and 10% down. The combination of these natural materials ensures a first-class sleeping experience.
Pillows with microfibre filling
We also have pillows filled with imitation down made of 100% microfibre. Thanks to their innovative composition, these pillows are excellent to sleep on, and they are also easy to care for. This pillow filling is suitable for almost everyone and is also available in a hypoallergenic version, for extra sleeping pleasure. A microfibre filling is available for every level of support: firm, medium and soft. All of them give you very pleasant sleeping comfort.
Thanks to the flexible properties of the filling, you can easily mould your pillow into the shape you want, without the filling losing its resilience.
Our feathers and down come from Germany and Eastern Europe (the Carpathians). They are certified feathers and down with a zero-tolerance standard. All DOUXE feather and down products carry the Downpass certificate and can be traced with a unique control number. The Downpass certificate guarantees that the feathers and down are produced responsibly and come from strictly controlled, traceable supply chains. Animal welfare and supply chain transparency are central. With the Downpass certificate, you can be sure that no live plucking or force-fed animals were used for the products. Watch a video here.
At DOUXE, we prefer hotel-quality pillows. Standard Dutch pillows are not wide enough to make the bed look beautiful, and their height does nothing for your comfort. Hotel pillows, on the other hand, are much wider at 90 cm or 100 cm, beautifully spanning the full width of the bed. It is no wonder that hotel beds always look so beautifully made. Hotel pillows play a significant role in this.
In addition, hotel pillows also provide more support. With a height of 50 cm, hotel pillows offer more support in the hollow of the neck, because the filling, with its limited height, has nowhere to go. Your head covers only a small part of the pillow surface. The pillow sinks in at the bottom and the filling moves upwards. You don't need all that space in height. In fact, you would rather not have it, because you want the hollow of your neck to be properly filled.
You will drift off into blissful dreams on the pillows from this superior collection. The luxury hotel pillows are made of premium materials and are used in, among others, the Mainport Design Hotel, Pulitzer Amsterdam, Hotel Okura and the Bilderberg Hotels. They are extremely comfortable to sleep on and are available in different sizes and fillings. As standard, a hotel bed is equipped with two to four down pillows and two pillows with a synthetic filling. For an extra luxurious look and true hotel comfort, choose pillows that take up the full width of your bed. Thanks to their unique shape, they look stunning in your bedroom. Within this collection, you can choose a specific level of support: firm, medium, soft and combinations of these.
All our pillows are finished with a high-quality ticking. This fabric fits your pillow like a glove, is made of 100% finely woven cotton and is down-proof. Thanks to the light cotton ticking, you enjoy even greater sleeping comfort.
Our products are developed with care and attention by craftspeople. All DOUXE pillows are produced in Austria. The materials are made by hand by expert seamstresses. As a result, our products have a very high level of finish that no machine in the world can achieve.
If you like sleeping under a slightly heavier duvet, choose a duvet with more feathers and a little less down, such as the DOUXE Original duvet. It consists of 70% feathers and 30% down. If you prefer a lightweight duvet, the DOUXE Exclusive duvet with 10% feathers and 90% down is very suitable. An even more luxurious alternative is the Prestige duvet, filled with 100% goose down. If you tend to feel the cold, an all-year version will do, or you can choose the winter version. For warmer nights, we recommend our summer duvet. Take the quiz here and discover which duvet suits you best.
Our hotel duvets are made of down and feathers, which provide good insulation, ventilation and temperature regulation. But DOUXE also offers durable, top-quality anti-allergy duvets with synthetic microfibres.
- 100% down: the DOUXE Prestige duvet is the ultimate in luxury and comfort all year round. The softly draping goose down duvet is super soft and, thanks to the 100% down, very lightweight, yet well insulating and therefore wonderfully warm. The down-proof ticking of luxurious cotton batiste feels silky soft against the skin. The Prestige Duvet is available in an all-year and a winter version.
- 90% down and 10% feathers: the DOUXE Exclusive duvet is a lightweight duvet of above-average quality. The filling consists of 90% goose down, which makes for a lightweight duvet with good insulation. The 10% feathers make the duvet slightly heavier than the Prestige duvet. The 10% feathers also let a little more air into the compartments, which makes the Exclusive duvet feel cooler than the Prestige duvet. The ticking is made of 100% soft (down-proof) cotton.
- 70% feathers and 30% down: with a ratio of 70% feathers to 30% down, the higher percentage of feathers makes for a weighty, full duvet. At the same time, the higher feather content makes the duvet less insulating, so it feels cooler. The percentage of down ensures that the duvet insulates enough for comfortable warmth throughout the night. Thanks to the perfect balance between down and feathers, this is a richly filled Original All Year, Original All Year Plus or Mainport duvet, perfect for a good night's sleep.
- 100% synthetic microfibres: the original Pulitzer Duvet from Hotel Pulitzer Amsterdam is the optimal synthetic version of a real down duvet. The microfibres are processed as small loose particles in separate compartments, which gives the duvet a luxurious look. This duvet offers exceptional sleeping comfort. The synthetic duvet from the Okura hotel and Hotel Bilderberg is also a wonderful duvet. In these duvets, the synthetic fibre is stitched into the ticking, which makes them feel less fluffy. These duvets with 100% cotton ticking are easy to care for and very suitable as anti-allergy bedding.
Sleep soundly under DOUXE's hotel collection of duvets. This collection of luxurious hotel quality has been developed especially for DOUXE and is produced in Austria. To match the ultimate hotel experience, all duvets are made of high-quality materials. Varying in filling and made from different raw materials: there is something for everyone. Experience a luxury hotel bed in your own bedroom with DOUXE's first-class duvets.
Are you ready for a new duvet but not sure which size suits you best? Then the size of your mattress is a good starting point. The dimensions of your duvet will always be slightly larger than those of your mattress. This is because the duvet will hang over the edge of your bed at both the sides and the foot.
- For an average single bed, a duvet is 140 cm wide and 220 cm long
- For an average double bed, a duvet is 240 cm wide x 220 cm long
- Is your mattress 160 cm or 180 cm wide? Then choose a duvet that is 240 cm wide
- Is your mattress 200 cm wide? Then choose a duvet that is 260 cm wide
- Is your mattress 200, 210 or 220 cm long? Then choose a duvet with a length of 220 cm
Yes. Duvets with a filling of down and/or feathers are suitable for people who are allergic to house dust mites. Bedding filled with feathers and down offers a very favourable balance of warmth and climate: it warms up faster while you sleep and releases moisture faster when aired. This makes it a very unfavourable environment for house dust mites, which depend on humidity.
The high-quality feather- and down-proof ticking also offers extra protection, preventing mites from getting in. Even if you are allergic to house dust mites or have asthma, you do not have to give up the natural sleeping comfort that down and feathers offer.
All DOUXE duvets carry the NOMITE label. You can find this under Certification on the relevant pages. The NOMITE label indicates that the product is suitable for people with a house dust mite allergy.
A natural filling of feathers and down regulates temperature better and ventilates better. DOUXE's synthetic microfibre filling comes from Germany and gives the same airy feel as a down filling. A synthetic filling offers slightly more resilience and is sometimes perceived as slightly warmer.
A synthetic filling material that provides the same feel as down fillings.
